PROFILE
SHORT BIOGRAPHY
Mohammad Abdul Aziz was born in Gazipur, Bangladesh, in 1978. He obtained his B.Sc. (Honours), M.Sc. and M.Phil. in Zoology from Jahangirnagar University, with specialization in wildlife and conservation research. He received his PhD from the University of Kent, UK, in 2017 for his research on the population and evolutionary conservation genetics of Bengal tigers in the Bangladesh Sundarbans. Currently Dr Aziz serves as Professor at the Department of Zoology, Jahangirnagar University.
Apart from teaching at the department, Dr Aziz has been engaged in research and conservation on different threatened species of wildlife and their habitats over decades. His major works focus on Bengal tigers, Asian elephants, small carnivores including Fishing cat, Bengal fox, and bats and rodents. The most recent groundbreaking works of Dr Aziz include estimating tiger populations using non-invasive DNA fingerprinting technique and camera-trapping in the Bangladesh Sundarbans; assessing the carrying capacity of the Bangladesh Sundarbans for tigers; and leading to prepare the national Atlas and Action Plan on Ganges river dolphin and Irrawaddy dolphin of Bangladesh.
During his research and conservation activities of wild animals over two decades, Dr Aziz has published over 60 research articles and co-authored several books and book chapters on different aspects of biodiversity and wildlife of Bangladesh. He is a life member of the Zoological Society of Bangladesh; member of IUCN SSC Asian Elephant Specialist Group; a technical member of the Joint Working Group for developing protocols and SoPs for transboundary elephant management between Bangladesh and Indian landscapes. Dr Aziz received the Durrell Trust for Conservation Biology Prize in 2017/18 of the University of Kent, UK for his outstanding works for PhD on Bengal tigers.
